Cabbie #9

Haven’t written about cabbies for a while.  I thought I’d try to write this one up before drifting off.

He is from Bangladesh.  He’s been here for 4 years.  Loves the weather here because it’s not too humid.  Like me, he hates the humidity of the country we’re from.  Unfortunately Thursday night business wasn’t too good for him.  He wasn’t very good with the street names either, but was happy to be directed, even though he had a GPS suctioned to the windscreen.

I asked whether there are any good Bangladeshi restaurants around.  He said most of the Bangladeshi food is labeled as Indian, because they are somewhat similar and that people will go to eat Indian because they know Indian but may shirk at the Bangladeshi label because they’re not familiar with it.  Apparently they still have the same bread like roti and naan.  Most of the difference is in the spices they use in the curry.  He also said the Bangladeshi curry tend to be more “juicy”.  I said, “like, more saucy?”.  “Yeah, that’s right.  More saucy.”, he replied.  He reckoned that it is because of the weather.

He likes Australia because he feels safe here.  Police are OK in general.  Weather is good.  Environment is more relaxed.  Sounded like he has found the right country in which to live.

As I directed him around the last few corners to my place, I asked if he likes cricket. Yes was the reply.  We were both looking forward to the start of the next season.  He said he used to play, but no time now.  Batting and fielding were his thing.  He wasn’t as much of a bowler, but whenever he bowled, he would bowl off-spin.  I thought he looked like an off-spinner.  And with that and a small tip I bid him farewell.

Humble fellow.  Down to earth fellow.  Passionate fellow.  Bangladeshi no doubt, but very Australian at heart at the same time.
