Cabbie #5
Published by Wing September 4th, 2006 in Everything, CabbiesCabbie number five was from Bangladesh. Started his shift late at 8pm (usual cab shifts begin and end at 3am and 3pm). It was a very quiet Sunday night. He reckons it was due to people staying home on Fathers Day. Sunday nights usually aren’t pumping with business, but he said tonight was especially quiet. He was interested in what I did for a living, as I found out later that he had finished his IT degree here just last year, but is driving a cab to start making some money first while looking for a job. He has been in Australia for four years, probably to start his degree. Ended up finding a girl and getting married as well. He’s happy here. Didn’t celebrate Fathers Day as his parents are in Bangladesh, as is his brother, although he lives quite a bit away from the parents because of study. His dad can’t leave the country as he’s really settled there, with business to take care of. Also has a sister in the US. All happy where they are. He likes cricket, use to play it back home. I suggested that if he wants to keep playing he could check out some suburban clubs as I know of friends who play in those competitions. He said he batted and bowled. A bit of an all rounder. He bowls medium pace. I told him I mainly batted, mainly middle order as I get nervous opening, enjoyed the occasional wicket keeping, but couldn’t really bowl that well, which was true. I said as a Chinese migrant, learning to play cricket was not only fun, it made me lots of friends. That, and learning to play handball. He nodded and smiled. All round nice chap. Genuine, full of hope, with a warm disposition. He was tip worthy, and so I did.
