Movie Footsies

On my way home from the day of photography on Sunday, I went and saw The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. That’s when it happened again. Movie footsies. Now, up until that day I was never really sure if it was a real phenomenon or not, but I am now convinced that it isn’t all in my head.

What is movie footsies? It’s when in the middle of a movie you cross your leg one way, and somewhere along the way you find the person (stranger) next to you crossing the leg the other way, so that your feet are almost meeting in the middle. You don’t know how it happened, it just happened. You then notice your friendly neighbour wiggling her foot in that “I’m stretching my ankle” kinda way, but it catches your attention. Especially in this case as she was wearing white sneakers. So what happens next is you try to inch your feet together as close as possible, without touching. In most cases, they don’t actually touch because neither of your are brave enough, and are waiting for the other to make the move. In this case, she made the move and knocked my foot with hers. I wasn’t sure if that was on purpose, so I just kept my position, but soon after that she crossed her leg away from mine. Probably because I didn’t reply her knocking. Yep, I had missed my moment.

This had happened to me more than a handful of times. However I had always thought it was all in my head. Only this time, something told me that this really did happen. Her foot was flirting with mine. It was the fact that as she left the theatre, just before she got to the door, she looked back. Funny thing was that I actually looked towards the door at the same time, to see if she was looking back. Quick glances, and we both looked away. She left the theatre, and I sat staring at the credits with a grin. I usually stay to watch the credits and to listen to the music, but this time I couldn’t stop grinning. At the same time I kept wondering what would’ve happened if I returned her knocking.

Yep, I think it IS a brilliant film. Dramatic, but not melodramatic. A dash of grey humour, but not silly. It’s a very well balanced and poignant story driven by well sketched characters. Even the score was just right. Not too sweepy and showy, but has just the right measure of presence to accompany your emotions instead of mustering it around like cattle. Totally my kind of film. 4 stars.
