Blind Man Chuffed

It’s just past week three of post eye surgery time and I’m able to say the fogginess is almost gone.
Week one was blurry, though the focus was there. It just looked like a fogged up camera lens, and very light sensitive. It was hard to get around during the day without sunnies (that’s sunglasses for the non-Aussies). Having said that, I was back at work 5 days after the surgery.
Week two was better again, though the fogginess was still noticeable. Computer screen was still hard to read, especially little black text on white background.
For these first two weeks I made frequent use of the accessibility feature of my iBook. On top of that, I’ve come to realise how much I took for granted that I actually could see with help of thick glasses or contact lens, while there are people who rely on these accessibility features (or disadvantaged by the lack thereof) to get on with everyday life. I seem to notice wheelchair ramps more these days. Funny that.
Wow. Vision. It’s such a sweet thing. Appreciate your six senses. Take care of them, and use them wisely. That would be my thought of the day.
I still haven’t decided on whether to keep the coke-bottle glasses as a memento, or to throw them out for a symbolic fresh start. I think I’ll eventually throw them out with great joy, but like my old shoes (yes, I still have them), I’ll probably keep them for a little while longer.
To be honest, it’s still a bit hard to believe. It’s a bit surreal, a bit dream like. I guess I’m still not fully use to it. That day will come I’m sure. I’ll take my good eyes for granted before too long, but I’ll always remember this surgery and be reminded of how lucky I am.
